Hurricane Helene - September 27, 2024

Message from Claus on October 7th, 2024:

-Most buildings are fine including our home, Chief's home, Office, Garage/Shop, Dining Hall, Indian Lore, Nature Den, Mountaineering Cabin

-Trees on roof of both Lodges but still dry inside. Tree guy coming this week to see what he can do. I trust him.

-Chapel is the worst hit; several holes in roof with giant limbs from the poplars crashed through. Access right now is almost impossible due to downed trees.

-Dam and bridge below held! Best news of all! Shout out to John Garner the engineer who designed, permitted and oversaw construction several years ago.

-The ground/creek crossing further down is completely washed out so no way heavier vehicles can get over to the junior camp side.

-The slope to the west stretching from above our new house to the Chapel and beyond up to Tsali, at least half the trees are on the ground. You can see the ridge now from the camp which was not visible before. Must have been a tornado.

-Driveway had 15 or so big trees that Nicholas cleared. -Blackberry Inn Road was washed out in several places and bridge above camp had a landslide. All residential bridges to the north were washed out along with several homes right on the creek.

-Devastation along Reems Creek Road, probably less than 10% of utility poles standing. Numerous homes, cars, sheds, etc. washed away.

-Community has been exceptional; the Beech Community Center has more supplies than needed and cooking lunch and dinner for anyone and all the responders. One can get emotional about the responders flying helicopters, cooking meals, evacuating/rescuing people, guarding property/entry/exit, dump truck and track hoe drivers, you name it. Gives you faith in humanity!

Thanks to all for well wishes. The Camp will be changed forever but we are determined to keep the legacy.
